Choosing the Right Summer Camp

February 21, 2012

What Parents Should Know About Choosing a Summer Program

DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. -- With school coming to a close, parents should already be thinking about selecting a summer camp for their children. With many options available, After School Programs (, a not-for-profit organization that provides summer camps, after school programs and tutoring to public schools throughout Miami Dade, Broward, Orange and Collier counties, offers these tips to parents:

1. Camps are a good option for parents, especially when both parents work, because they keep children active in a safe, secure environment and out of trouble that comes with a lack of supervision and idle time.

2. Parents should seek activities that fit in with their child’s personality, whether it’s sports, acting, or outdoor. Many camps offer recreational activities that include outings or trips that provide unique experiences to children and give them exposure to something they may have otherwise not been able to do.

3. Be prepared to pay $100 to $200 per child per week for summer camps, depending upon the types of activities and the ratio of counselors to children. For those unable to afford them, 100% funding scholarship may be offered for some programs.

4. It’s important to find a reliable camp that is accredited and has been in business for years and has experience in dealing with children.

All workers should have gone through the proper background checks and should have a clearly defined list of activities available for parents to see.
